Scania Control (Defense)

Scania Towing truck ECU- Problem Statement

  • Bofors gun weighing 12 tons are towed by Specially made Scania All terrain trucks
  • 1980s vintage, the Indian Army were facing difficulties getting service / spares
  • Approximately 400 Scania trucks need ECU to be serviced/replaced
  • Critical components have reached obsolescence & were not available
  • The parent company was not inclined to support & the Army were under pressure to identify a support source
  • This was a potential threat for Bofors deployment /battle readiness
  • EME 507 as part of indegenisation drive , gave an open challenge to the private sector to develop a competent solution
  • Replacement difficult and costly –response times in months rather than days
  • Implications
    • Affects operational readiness
    • Longer repair times
    • No SLA
    • Higher costs for repairs and replacements
    • Purchase in US$
  • Unisem took up the challenge
  • The degree of difficulty was immense as there was no documentation / instruction manuals were 35 years old & the people who had received & initially trained on Scania truck were no longer in service
  • Unisem visited the firing range in Babina & the design team spend considerable time to study /evaluate & come with a solution
  • After considerable development & testing , Unisem developed a microntroller based solution thus future proofing the needs of the Army & averting a major crisis
  • Intensive tests were done by the Army & the product certified fit for mass deployment
  • Unisem could support the Army at one fourth of the cost quoted by the foreign principal , thus helping in saving precious foreign exchange
  • Around 70 trucks are currently running on Unisem solution & rest are being fitted in phases
